We thought we understood how planets formed until we began discovering worlds around other stars. Some planets orbit dead suns, others circle two stars, and some drift through space with no star at all. This talk takes you on a journey through some of the strangest worlds ever discovered, exploring how they might have formed and whether any could host life. Dr. Elizabeth Tasker delves into these fascinating topics in her book The Planet Factory: Exoplanets and the Search for a Second Earth.
Dr. Elizabeth Tasker is an associate professor at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), Institute of Space and Astronautical Sciences (ISAS). Her research uses computer models to study the formation of planets and galaxies. She earned her PhD in computational astrophysics from the University of Oxford and taught physics for four years at Hokkaido University before joining JAXA in 2016.
Her popular science book The Planet Factory: Exoplanets and the Search for a Second Earth was published in September 2017. Engineering and Technology magazine described it as “engaging and informative… a great introduction to a relatively new and fast-changing aspect of scientific endeavor.”
